Vice President, Research & Academic Affairs
Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) is one of the largest academic health science organizations with nearly 700 researchers, supported by hundreds of staff, attracting more than $140 million in external research funding every year.
The Vice President Research & Academic Affairs (VPR) will provide strategic and scientific leadership of research and academic education across the PHSA-wide research enterprise. The VPR will ensure a voice for research and PHSA’s academic mandate at the highest possible level. Reporting directly to the President and CEO, and as a member of the Senior Executive Team, the VPR will work in collaboration with PHSA research centres/institutes and clinical leaders to plan and advance strategic research initiatives, develop budget and financial plans, and leverage resources to support an environment that attracts, supports and retains the highest calibre researchers and research trainees.
As an inspirational and respected leader, the VPR will represent PHSA research and academic education with the PHSA board of directors and with external partners. The successful incumbent will champion and lead collaborative research initiatives that strategically advance the conduct of research within PHSA and the application of evidence-based knowledge to improve care in BC. Additionally, the VPR will lead PHSA’s work with academic partners to develop a high-performing health workforce for the future.
The VPR will work closely with researchers, clinicians, and funding and academic partners to promote a research environment in which world-class research is undertaken and applied to improve health outcomes and the health system. The VPR will provide strategic leadership, working collaboratively with PHSA research leaders to advance delivery of an integrated tripartite academic health mandate focused on excellence and global reach.
The ideal candidate brings relevant leadership, education, training, and experience equivalent to a graduate degree (PhD or MD) in behavioral sciences or health plus a minimum of 10 to 15 years of a distinguished career in research achievement in one or more areas covered by PHSA research. This appointment requires an accomplished leader of influence who demonstrates superior communication skills, innovation, strategic excellence and vision with the ability to foster collaboration and diversity, and build consensus in a collegial environment. A broad base of experience and knowledge in the continuum of health and health research is essential, with a deep understanding of the changing health system and the rapid translation of evidence into action to improve that system performance and care.
