Summary

Emily Carr University of Art + Design has developed a research profile over the past 20 years in Design for HealthCare.  Under the umbrella of the Health Design Lab, faculty and students are engaged in applied research involving industrial design, communications design, and interaction design in collaboration with local health authorities and private sector partners.  Research themes include the relationship between the hospital built environment and the virtual environment, the patient experience including way finding, communication, and healthy living, assistive devices, and mobile healthcare applications.

The Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in HealthCare Design at Emily Carr will provide academic leadership for this Lab and, with administrative support, will manage the operations of the Health Design Lab.  The Research Chair will be expected to develop the leading Lab in Canada in this field, and to establish the quantitative and qualitative value that the design disciplines can bring to pressing healthcare issues.

The successful candidate will have an established record of scholarly/creative achievement within the broad area of design and healthcare.  The ideal candidate may come from an architectural background, or from engineering, computer science or design.  The new Research Chair will have an exceptional ability to articulate and realize a strategic research program, to inspire and lead faculty colleagues and students, and to work closely with external collaborators.  The ideal candidate will have an international reputation in their field, and a demonstrated ability to raise research funds, supervise graduate students, and publish in leading peer-reviewed journals.

This is an excellent opportunity for a proven researcher with an exceptional record of academic and design accomplishment from a degree-granting institution to contribute to the internationally acclaimed record of research and scholarship of one of Canada’s premier art, media and design schools.
